Public relations are too often only thought of in the event of a crisis. That’s because an old adage is extremely applicable to public relations: “An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. The best public relations is performed without recognition. While dealing with a crisis is anxiety inducing, it’s also a reality in this field and extremely entertaining. So, let’s take a look at a PR conundrum, what was done, and what could’ve been done.

Prince Harry is a self-proclaimed reject and ‘spare’, which is the title of his self-written memoir. Spare has broken records and broken relationships. It details the details that are meant to go unseen from a royal family.

The biggest story broke before the book was released and detailed Harry’s experience with frostbite. He got it in some standard places, like the cheeks and ears. But the big headline was that ‘little Harry’ got frostbite if you know what I mean. According to his book, he was dealing with this during Prince William’s wedding… yikes. It should put your mind at ease that little Harry has made a full recovery. Another albeit less salacious detail to come out was Prince Harry’s use of laughing gas at Archie’s birth. Illicit drug usage has lost its scandalous effect over the years, but it’s worth mentioning. Harry details using up a canister of laughing gas which Megan was obviously supposed to be using, when the nurse came in and realized what must’ve happened, he let out a guilty ‘sorry’ and they all laughed.

But not all his stories were something to giggle at. He detailed hating wearing royal clothes and empathizing with cows because they just want to be left alone. The most saddening details however were about his familial relations. An account of Prince William physically attacking him in Kensington Palace makes the tabloid drama more human than we wished for.

What do the rest of the royals have to say about all this?

Nothing. No comment. Radio Silence.

While this may be solid on a legal basis, silence means guilt in the court of public opinion. Some royal stans are praising them for their action/inaction, but I’m not. I’m also not a royal stan(fanatic supporter). So how would I advise the royals?

It’s simple, be or at least act like a loving family. Be the bigger man, reach out to Harry and take responsibility for their shortcomings. After privately extending the olive branch, publicly do the same. Harry hasn’t just dragged the serving royals’ names through the dirt, he has done it for himself as well. If he wants to make up with his family, then he will take the opportunity to rebuild the bridge he’s effectively been destroying for the past several years. But if he doesn’t accept the apology and publicly denounces the royals still, he will be seen as an immature attention seeking brat. Sometimes winning takes sacrifice and in this case, the royals need to sacrifice some pride and dignity if they ever want Prince Harry to be the prodigal son.
